As part of the ‘Stony Words’ programme, SMSG Church Band was keen to put on an event especially for children. It was also an invitation to the ‘young at heart’ and we were delighted that all ages came to take part, whether accompanied by a child or not.
Words are much easier to learn and remember when learnt with a tune and so we aimed to maximise the words with the Band playing too. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and Happy Birthday are probably known by everyone, not to mention Old MacDonald Had a Farm.
There was plenty of audience participation throughout, with voices, actions, shakers and bells. There were some animal themes in some songs and many Band members sported animal costumes and headdresses to add to the occasion.
There was a quick interval for refuelling and then the singing and audience participation continued. All the children we given a small pot of bubbles for the final piece – ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles ’ – and some much older ‘children’ also joined in.
In fact, it was hard to tell who was having more fun!
