Playpals
The steady stream of people who entered St Mary and St Giles church on August bank holiday afternoon via the street and west doors encountered music by two different groups of performers who wanted to perform informally.
Although there was no town fair on Horsefair Green this year for the first time since 1969, there were still some people about in the high street on the sunny afternoon who were looking for entertainment and refreshment.
Playpals
Playpals (a U3A band) and Patricia Leslie (mezzo soprano) each provided a variety of songs and pieces for us to enjoy as cream teas were consumed. Some people sat specifically to listen to the music and some people sat around the tables sat the back of the church with their cream teas.
Playpals included saxophones, clarinet, flutes, violin, guitars and piano. Highlights from Playpals included "Mr Sandman", "Always look on the bright side of life", "All I want of you" (Everley brothers), "Scarborough Fair", "Raindrops keep falling on my head" and "Bring me sunshine" for which we were given the words to sing along.
Ros and Patricia
For some pieces they had smaller groupings of performers - duets and trios for added variety and to give each other a break from playing.
Patricia, accompanied by Ros Whatmore, gave some lovely renditions of "The Lark in the clear air", "Where'er you walk", "Pie Jesu" (Lloyd Webber), "I know a bank", "Das Veilchon", "Caro Mio Ben", "Tell me, lovely shepherd" and "Summertime".

We had a willing band of volunteers lead by Kath who had made scones, served refreshments, washed up, moved the piano, tables and chairs. We raised £141.70 from the Cream teas (the concert was free).
I would like to thank everyone who helped and all the performers who gave us such a lovely afternoon of music treats to complement the scones, jam and cream.
