The first lunchtime concert of 2017 on 19 January began with ‘When I’m Sixty-four’, a perfect introduction to the mellow tone of this relaxed event. Fadin' Shoes – Andy, Les and Tim – immediately engaged the audience, who were enjoying the usual excellent refreshments served by Fiona and Jean, and moved us swiftly on to an upbeat version of ‘All of Me’ – a real top tapper.
An early Eagles’ hit, ‘Train Leaves Here This Morning’, was next with vocals by Andy and Tim, taking us back to the American Mid West. Django Rheinhardt’s ‘Swing 42’showed us the band’s love of - and talent for - playing instrumental music.
Three iconic Beatles’ numbers followed with heartfelt versions of the soulful ‘Yesterday’, ‘Here, there and everywhere’, and ‘Something’ showing the performers’ versatility with complex arrangements.
Bobby Darin’s ‘Beyond the Sea’ and ‘Streets of London’ continued the concert, with the audience happy to join in with the chorus of Tim’s personal McTell favourite.
‘Amazing Grace’ brought this melodic and engaging concert to a close with the grateful and appreciative audience keen to listen again to the requested encore, ‘Swing 42’. Hopefully, ‘Fadin’ Shoes’ will be stepping their way back to St Mary and St Giles Church before too long. Thanks to them and, as always, to Lesley for organising the event which raised £61.27 for the organ fund.
