Dithyrambe Trio

The Dithyrambe Trio

On the Friday afternoon in the StonyLive! week an enthusiastic audience was treated to a concert given by the Dithyrambe Trio.  The trio are:

Lucía Veintimilla (violin)

Greta Åstedt (piano)

Ben Westlake (clarinet)

We welcomed Lucia, Greta and our own Ben from down the roadThey performed a variety of music composed in the 20th Century performing as a trio, duos and solos.

Obviously the music was brilliantly performed but highlights included:

  • the Klezmer style clarinet item composed by Kovacs (Ben explained that he had lessons from Yehudi Gilad who was taught by Giora Fiedman for whom the music was written);
  • Greta’s ability to make the piano sing in the Toccata;
  • Lucia’s skill in the Sabre Dance.

The final highlight of the concert was Stravinsky’s Suite from the Soldier’s Tale.  Although originally written for orchestra with narrator, a shorter trio version also exists but a narration for this version could not be found.  The narrator for this concert, Matthew Lucas, was invited to find or write it!  Fortunately, by using the internet, Matthew was able to find a gentleman in Colorado called Douglas Penick who had prepared one for a concert.  Matthew contacted Douglas Penick who was able to send Matthew a copy and kindly allowed it to be used in this performance.  Matthew did a fine job of narrating the words to fit with the wonderful playing of the three musicians, together they produced a performance of great impact and pathos.

Here is the concert programme…
