The annual Stony Stratford live music festival is in full swing, and St Mary & St Giles continues to host some of the musical offerings this week. Yesterday MK Community Choir gave a concert in the church, I was unfortunately unable to attend and don't know how it went.
This evening (Wednesday 9th June) my daughter Eleanor and I were in the second of 2 concerts in the church, the first being the Handbells. In fact we arrived part way through the concert, and Lesley encouraged audience participation by handing out bells to willing volunteers, so Eleanor played with them for a piece. There was a short refreshment break while the band set up for the second concert. We had prepared some of our old favourites as well as a couple of 'new to the band' pieces ('Havah Nagilah' and the 'Choral' from Ted Huggens's 'Choral and Rockout').
During the first half of the band concert Jacob played his violin in the gallery while Dave accompanied him on the baby grand piano down below - they played 'Fiddler on the Roof', the gallery being the roof for this occasion! During the second half of the concert Eleanor played one of her Grade 3 piano pieces on the organ. The organ has an electrical fault at the moment which meant it cut out part way through the Gloria on Sunday, and in the concert Andrew was busy continuing to fix it so that Eleanor could play, otherwise she would have done it on the piano.
A total of 37 people were in the audience. These concerts were for the church restoration fund, together they raised £65.50. However one person gift aided £20 towards the organ fund which was a nice unexpected bonus.
Tomorrow evening at 5.30 pm the band is playing in Odells Yard in Stony Stratford. On Friday evening "Building with the B's" is the title of the Byrd, Bach and Beyond concert for viola and piano (Valerie Kirby-Ashmore and Geoffrey Allan Taylor). Saturday at 6.00 pm is MK Chorale's turn and so long as the organ behaves on Sunday, Dr Andrew Storer will give a recital at 6.00 pm after cream teas from 4.00 pm.
