SMSG church band played Christmas carols and songs for shoppers at Kingston shopping centre (Milton Keynes) on Saturday morning (19th December), collaborating with The Orphean Singers to fill a 2 hour slot with music. Some members of the band are also in the singers and on the day other band members joined in the singing too.
We were collecting for the Ear, Nose and Throat department of MK General hospital, which saved the hearing of young organist Jacob Collins a few years ago. Jacob is currently the accompanist for the singers and has been an SMSG band member for several years.
It was a mild day and we were playing indoors between two main entrances so not many of us were wearing our band fleeces over our Christmas jumpers. Most of us were wearing Santa hats, antlers or Christmas trees on our heads. We had a lot of fun playing and singing together and there was a steady clunk of coins into the collecting buckets during the morning.
The band interspersed traditional Christmas carols with seasonal songs (including favourites such as Rudolf the Red-nosed reindeer, Sleigh ride and Have yourself a merry little Christmas).
The Orphean Singers gave a lively rendition of the 12 days of Christmas which raised lots of smiles.
The Orphean Singers and SMSG church band raised the magnificent total of £194.94 for the ENT unit at MK hospital.
