Playpals making a Thursday lunchtime musical

Playpals gave the 17th October 2019 Third Thursday at Twelve Thirty concert.

Those who arrived very early to this concert had a preview of one of the songs, which was being rehearsed - they were so impressed that they thought they were late and that the concert had already started!

The U3A group comprised 12 players on piano, flute, clarinet, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, rhythm and bass guitars and drums/percussion.  And what a lovely sound they made, beginning with Daydream Believer and moving on to Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, which featured 3 improvised sections from the flautist, tenor and baritone sax players.

Sue played Fauré’s Pavane on clarinet and John gave a Baritone Saxophone solo called Iguana Blue.  Both were ably accompanied by Jeff on the piano.

The great variety of music and styles was a great feature of this concert, illustrated by The Cup Song, Spanish Harlem, Here comes the Sun, Jamaica Farewell and Chattanooga Choo Choo.  The audience was encouraged to sing along and we all enjoyed clapping to Sailor’s Hornpipe and helping the musicians to speed up with each repeat.  It was a magnificent achievement by the whole group, but especially the woodwind players!
