St Mary & St Giles Pipe Organ Fund Refurbishment Appeal Committee are pleased to announce that we are celebrating the refurbishment of the Willis organ console with a Grand Gala Concert on Saturday 11th June at 7.30 pm in the church, which will raise funds for the main organ action work which is still needed.
The concert will feature a number of choral groups including Quorum, Andante, The Orphean Singers and the Parish Singers, as well as instrumental gems provided by James Westlake (flute), Ed Tomlinson (organ) and young people from Milton Keynes Music Service Baroque Group.
Highlights include Allegri's Misere mei (directed by James Wharton) performed by The Parish Singers with Quorum - the singers will make good use of the gallery where the semi-chorus will be placed, A Karl Jenkins Suite performed by Andante (directed by Roger Windmill) and a sequence of music for Holy Week and Easter composed by Tomas Luis de Victoria and Thomas Tallis - 2011 is the 400th anniversary of Victoria's death, and Quorum (directed by Toby Hill) will be singing a selection of pieces from his Tenebrae Responsories, finishing with Christ Rising Again by Tallis.
James Westlake, who plans to enter the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2012, will play Annie's song by John Denver, La Flute de Pan by Mouquet (2nd movement), Moonriver by Mancini and Tambourin by Gossec. Ed Tomlinson and James Wharton will play organ music by Bach and Widor, probably on the hired electronic Allen organ, as the Willis console is currently being refurbished by FH Browne of Kent and it is quite possible that the work will still be in progress by the time of the concert.
Other musical treats for the evening include Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves by Verdi, Easter Hymn by Mascagni from Cavaliera Rusticana, as well as Baroque Dance music performed by Baroque group members from Milton Keynes Music Service (including two of the young people of St Mary & St Giles Parish).
Vouchers which can be exchanged for a programme at the door are available now from David Scrutton or Odells Shop in Stony Stratford. Alternatively please complete the contact form on the organ fund website to request vouchers. We suggest you book as soon as possible, because this promises to be a sell-out concert with so much glorious music on offer for your enjoyment.
