This afternoon's concert in the church was a showcase of the talents of flute and piano pupils of a private music teacher who lives in Stony Stratford. Frances Thornton asked Fr Ross if she could use the church for her pupils to show their progress, and he was very happy to agree. Last night after Parish Singers three of us moved the piano into position in readiness for the concert, and when I popped by at 1.30 pm some of the group were warming up. My elder daughter and I came to listen at 2.00 pm.
Flauto consists of 7 flute pupils and Frances. They played 7 pieces through the concert, interspersed with flute or piano solos from various other young performers, some of whom were absolute beginners and others who were a bit more advanced. It was quite a daunting experience for some of them, who had never played in public before especially in a large church. They did very well despite the nerves. The audience was mainly their families and friends, but also a few St Mary & St Giles parishioners who knew about it because Fr Ross had put it in the parish newsletter. I believe that once our Parish Hall is complete, Frances wants to return and do a whole day's workshop which will be great. For this reason a collection basket was available for anyone who wanted to contribute to the Church restoration fund which will help towards the building of the hall.
StonyLive 2010 starts in a few days time, with several concerts of various types in the church as part of the programme for this annual live music festival. Traditionally any funds raised at church concerts during the 10 days go to the church restoration fund, however there is one concert for the Organ Fund as Andante are returning to sing for us on 5th June at 7.30 pm after their successful romantic concert in February. This time their concert has a patriotic flavour, it is dedicated to Edward Elgar and there will be some 'last night of the proms' style flag waving at the end. Entry is by programme (£6 each, £5 concessions, £1 people under 20 years old) and vouchers are available from Odell's shop or 01908 561984 / firstname.lastname@example.org. So come along to to hear some songs and music you know and love.
