On Sunday 24th February 2013 at 6:00 pm Quorum will be singing the music for Choral Evensong for Lent in St Mary & St Giles Church, Stony Stratford and the music will include the following:
- Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis - Arvo Part
- Preces and Responses - Humphrey Clucas
- In Jejunio et Fletu - Thomas Tallis
Quorum is a small choir now in its 30th year which is based at St Mary Magdalene Church, Willen. They have visited St Mary & St Giles before (including performing during the OU Choir Concert in 2010). The choir predominantly sings in liturgical contexts and specialises in singing unaccompanied Early Church Music or Renaissance Polyphony, for which it is gaining a reputation as a local exponent. In recent years Quorum has started to explore unaccompanied sacred choral music from the 20th and 21st centuries. This complements its core repertoire of Early Church Music from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Quorum sings services of Evensong, Matins and Eucharist as a visiting choir at English cathedrals each year and to date has sung at Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford,Lincoln, Lichfield, Chichester, Christchurch Oxford, Southwark, Ely, Norwich and St Albans Abbey.
In 2012 Quorum was invited at short notice on recommendation to sing at Westminster Abbey, which has pre-existing links with the Willen Parish through the Busby Trust established by the headmaster of Westminster School who purchased the manor at Willen in 1672 and commissioned Robert Hooke to design and build the present church in 1680.
The music for the Lent Choral Evensong service at St Mary & St Giles will provide an opportunity to experience choral worship from old and new genres through the juxtaposition of the emotive music of Tallis, Clucas and Part.
Future services at which Quorum are contributing to worship are listed on their webpage at http://quorummk.org.uk/
