Orlando Jopling gave a superb high quality performance of two Bach’s Cello Suites (No 4 in Eb major and No 3 in C major) and Gaspar Cassado’s Suite for solo cello in St Mary & St Giles Church on a glorious summer afternoon in Stony Stratford, following cream teas in the parish hall.
Several months ago Shirley spotted an article about Orlando’s tour of churches all around the country with Bach Cello Suites. We were intrigued and invited him to play at our church for the organ fund. When the date was set for the second day of StonyLive we realised it was on the same day as the Classic Car festival in Market Square so we decided to precede his concert with Cream Teas as there would be so many people nearby who might want refreshments. So from 2:30 pm we served Tea and scones with people sitting outside the parish hall or indoors, then at 4:30 pm Dai introduced Orlando to the expectant audience who had gathered in the church. It was evident from the very first bow stroke that we were in for a huge treat as Orlando filled the church with the sonorous and warm tones of his cello playing in the following 70 minutes.
- J. S. Bach: Cello Suite No 4 in Eb major BWV 1010 (Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Bouree 1 & 2, Gigue)
- Gaspar Cassado: Suite for solo cello (Prelude Fantasia, Sardana, Intermezzo and Danza Finale)
- J. S. Bach: Cello Suite No 3 in C major BWV 1009 Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Bouree 1 & 2, Gigue)
It was heartening to see that 4 of the 63 people in the audience were under the age of 16, 3 of them were budding cellists.
A huge thank you to Orlando and his family for making the journey to Stony Stratford, it was a very memorable performance. I would like to thank everyone who helped set up, serve refreshments and tidy away afterwards. We raised a magnificent £840 for the organ fund which will sponsor some of the missing pipes.
