As part of Fair Trade Fortnight (FT14) our SMSG Church Band and Handbell Ringers put on a concert to highlight the importance of this foundation in caring for and promoting the needs of food producers, their families and communities. At the same time we wanted to help those locally who do not have enough to eat, by supporting the Milton Keynes Food Bank. Asking people to bring an item for the Food Bank bearing the Fair Trade logo seemed to embrace both these purposes and we collected a large basket of basic food and drink during the afternoon.
This year our concert also fell on Mothering Sunday!
The Band set off with Radetsky March by Johann Strauss, followed by the appropriately named, Food, Glorious Food. The Handbell Ringers treated us to a preview of their programme for this Saturday's annual Bell Fest, which is to be hosted by St Mary and St Giles Junior School Handbell Ringing Team in our school. We heard a six pieces in all, including a medley of nursery rhymes with many food references, Dvoràk's Largo and the hymn, Steal away to Jesus.
This concert also introduced Fadin' Shoes, a local guitar trio, who entertained us in both halves of the concert with the beautiful Beatles' song Here, there and Everywhere, Ralph McTell's Streets of London, songs for the audience to join in and a Christmas song! We greatly appreciated their willingness to join us and look forward to hearing them again.
After a welcome refreshment break, served by Fiona and Kieran and a good chat all the performers played again and the afternoon finished with What a wonderful world.
Together with the food collected, £77.08 was also donated in cash for the Food Bank. Thank you all!
