The church band welcomed several eager apprentices to our February Musical Bite Coffee morning for an enjoyable morning of sight reading new music. Lesley had advertised the event at St Mary & St Giles Church School so we were joined by several children who are learning music at school and some adult musicians.
Three young percussionists, two young guitar players, two young violinists, an adult cellist (our church organist) and an adult flautist swelled our numbers. It was new music for all of us; even the band. Lesley started us off with the easier pieces (to build confidence) then eased us into the slightly harder pieces. The young violinists were placed on either side of an experienced player, the guitarists with our experienced adult guitarist and the three junior percussionists swapped between the various drums and sticks/brushes throughout the morning and managed very well.
After 3 pieces we had a coffee and cake break then learned the remaining pieces. At 11:45 am we performed all the pieces in a mini concert for everyone who had come to eat and listen, in reverse order (hardest pieces first):
- Skyfall (James Bond) – Paul Epworth & Adele Adkins
- Isn’t she lovely – Stevie Wonder, arr Stuart Barrie
- Eleanor Rigby – Lennon and McCartney, arr Alan Frazer
- Lead me, Lord – S S Wesley, arr Lesley Salter 2014
- A bicycle built for two (Daisy Bell) – Harry Dacre, arr Lesley Salter 2014
Jacob, just back from boarding school (where he is studying music including organ), welcomed the band with organ music on the Willis and also played during the band coffee break and at the end.
Lesley did a wonderful job of co-ordinating the event and conducting the band throughout the morning. Several members of the organ fund team were playing in the band (Dave, Anna, Shirley, David and John) and helped in various ways before, during and afterwards. Nina and Dai ran the raffle while Jean, Gill and Fiona did a grand job in the kitchen serving tea, coffee, juice and the mountain of cakes which had been donated. I would like to thank everyone who helped and came along to appreciate the music and refreshments, there was such a happy vibe all morning and this all made the event highly enjoyable. The musicians of all ages appreciated the encouragement we received from the audience.
I am very pleased to announce we raised £230 for the organ fund.
