Voice Versa in concert

Music on August Bank Holiday Monday at SMSG has become a tradition and this year Voice Versa provided a wonderful programme of music from all seasons of the year, not just a rainy August!

While we served Cream Teas in the Parish Hall to a steady stream of hungry people who were not put off by the miserable weather, Clive, Valerie, Ann, Kevin and pianist Marjorie rehearsed in the church.

The singing quartet with their accompanist have performed for us before. Their programme was:

Quartet with piano

  • A popular song - Tea for two (Irving Caesar, Vincent Youmans, arr P Gritton)
  • The water of Tyne (English folk song, arr Michael Neaum)
  • La Bayiere (Baylero) (Traditional French, arr Goff Richards)
  • Moon River (Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer)

Valerie and Ann

  • Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman (Jacques Offenbach)

Quartet with piano

  • Smoke gets in your eyes (Jerome Kern, Otto Harbach, arr David Blackwell)
  • All in the April Evening (Hugh S Roberton)

Marjorie - Piano

  • Prelude in G major, & Sarabande from Suite No 5 (Bach)

Quartet with Piano

  • Londonderry Air (Traditional Irish, arr Bob Chilcott)
  • National Weather Forecast (Henry Mollicone)
  • Over the rainbow (H Arlen, arr Guy Turner, lyrics E. Harburg)
  • I do like to be beside the seaside (John A Glover-Kind, arr Andrew Carter)

  • Autumn leaves (J Kasma, A Carter, words J Mercer & G Parsons)
  • As torrents in summer (Edward Elgar, words Longfellow)

Quartet with piano

  • Shenandoah (American trad, arr Bob Chilcott)
  • Now spring in all her glory (Jacques Abkadelt, 16th century madrigal)
  • Let's do it (Cole Porter, arr David Blackwell)
  • Heraclitus (C. V. Stanford, poem by William Cory)

Marjorie - Piano

  • Scherzando from Sonata (Haydn 1750)

Quartet with piano

  • The Snow (Edward Elgar, arr J Pointer, words Alice Elgar)
  • Ill Wind (Flanders & Swann, after Mozart, arr P Gritton)
  • September Song (Kurt Weill, words Maxwell Anderson)
  • For the Beauty of the earth (John Rutter, words F. S. Pierpont)

Lesley, Sue, Dai, Marian, May, Kath, Ellie and Rosie all helped with refreshments while Anna did front of house in the church.  This lovely event raised an amazing £409.50 for the Organ Project.  I would like to thank Valerie, Ann, Clive, Kevin and Majorie for their wonderful music, David who did all the organizing ahead of the event but unfortunately couldn't attend, those who provided scones and everyone who helped on the day.
